Exclusive: Prabowo to Meet Iran’s President in Tehran, Envoy Says
Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto is set to fly to Tehran to meet his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian, according to an Iranian diplomat, although there is no set date yet.
Iranian Ambassador to Indonesia Mohammad Boroujerdi said Wednesday that Prabowo had already said yes to Pezeshkian’s invitation.
“His Excellency Prabowo has replied [to the invitation]. He expressed his readiness and interest to go to Iran. We are now looking for a good timing. We really appreciate [it],” Boroujerdi told the Jakarta Globe.
Boroujerdi admitted that the governments had yet to decide on the date, although it could “happen in the near future”. The Globe also asked the diplomat about what would be on the agenda.
“We have prepared many, many agreements in the field of economy, politics, and people-to-people connections, everything that is going to be negotiated in this visit,” Boroujerdi said.
This would mark the first time for Prabowo to set foot in the country as president. The retired army general has been a frequent traveler since assuming power in October 2024, making 32 trips within his first year. The last time an Indonesian leader came to Iran was Prabowo’s predecessor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo back in 2016. Both governments at the time inked a memorandum of understanding on renewable energy and power generation. Fast forward to 2023, Jokowi hosted Iran’s then-President Ebrahim Raisi and unveiled a bilateral preferential trade agreement.
Indonesia reported that trade with Iran had rose 18.71% year-on-year to $257.9 million in 2025. Jakarta’s surplus flourished at $240.2 million, thanks to exports of fruits ($86.4 million) as well as automotives and parts ($34.1 million).
At present, Iran has been making global headlines after anti-government protests swept across the country since December. The demonstrations have triggered crackdowns by authorities.
