Parties Backing Prabowo Take Complaint of Election Fraud to Bawaslu
Jakarta. Secretary generals of political parties in the coalition supporting presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto and his running mate Sandiaga Uno visited the Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) office in Jakarta on Sunday evening to complain of election fraud that they claim has jeopardized their chances of winning the presidential and legislative elections.
Ahmad Muzani from the Gerindra Party, Hinca Panjaitan from the Democratic Party, Eddy Suparno from the National Mandate Party (PAN) and Priyo Budi Santoso from the Beringin Karya Party (Berkarya) spent around an hour and a half at the Bawaslu office.
"We had a discussion with the Bawaslu chairman and several commissioners. We [the secretary generals] had already met between ourselves a few days ago," Muzani told reporters after the meeting.
Muzani said the meeting with the Bawaslu was a routine one and part of their agenda as secretary generals of their parties. They did not submit any official letters or information to the agency.
They did, however, discussed the thorny subject of election fraud.
"[We discussed] election fraud before, during and after the election. Bawaslu is the institution responsible for overseeing the legislative and presidential elections. We feel the fraud has been so massive and structured. It was so methodical in several electoral districts,” Muzani said.
According to him, there were different forms of fraud during the legislative election. But the Gerindra secretary general did not give any details.
Muzani drew attention only to the fact that in the 2014 legislative election, PAN won eight seats in Central Java but did not even win a seat in the recent election. He was also surprised by some political parties winning by very large margins in some districts.
"[Some political parties] got 70 percent [of the vote] in one electoral district. It’s unbelievable. [Fraud] has to be proven legally. But let's not talk about evidence for now," Muzani said.
"The fraud can be felt. We are not complaining. If we complain, we must bring evidence. We discussed [with the Bawaslu] how to improve the quality of our democracy together. Democracy is a choice we have agreed upon, as a way of distributing power," he said.
