Jakarta. Suspects linked to rioting in Jakarta last week have revealed a plot to assassinate Chief Security Minister Wiranto, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Pandjaitan, National Intelligence Chief Budi Gunawan and presidential special staff Gories Mere, National Police Chief Tito Karnavian said on Tuesday.

Police's revelation of the plot was based on testimonies from the six suspects who were arrested on May 21 and 24.

"This [plot revelation] is not based on intelligence information, but came from the legal process [interrogation and police dossier]. They [the suspects] mentioned the names Wiranto, Luhut, Budi and Gories," Tito said in a press conference at the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs in Jakarta.

Gories is a retired police general known as an anti-terrorism expert.

Tito mentioned that the head of a polling agency was also a target in the assassination plot, but declined to mention the name.

He said all the "executors" of the plot have been arrested.

"We have a developing theory about the person who ordered [the assassination plot]. Hopefully, shortly [the police can arrest the individual]," he said.

The police have made a series of arrests related to the May 22 riots.

So far, three groups are said to be involved in the riots – terrorist group Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD) and two other armed groups, including the six suspects linked to the Jakarta riots.

All the targets of the assassination plot have had their security arrangements beefed up since the plan was discovered, Tito said.

Wiranto said the assassination plan was devised to intimidate the officials and reduce their effectiveness.

"The plot is aimed at creating [an atmosphere of] fear among the officials, to hamper their activities and weaken [them]," Wiranto said.

Rioting broke out in Jakarta on May 22 after Prabowo's supporters protested President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's re-election in front of the offices of the Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu).

Anti-riot police, backed up by soldiers from the Military, finally managed to contain the situation late on Wednesday evening.
