Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto has instructed the Agriculture Ministry to revitalize Indonesia’s state-owned fertilizer plants in a move aimed at improving production efficiency, reducing distribution costs, and ensuring affordable fertilizer prices for farmers across the country.

The directive was delivered during a closed meeting at Prabowo’s private residence at South Jakarta, earlier this week. According to State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, the president underscored the need to modernize the national fertilizer production and distribution system to better meet farmers’ needs.

“The Agriculture Minister has been asked to find new schemes and breakthroughs to secure fertilizer availability. If possible, the revitalization of fertilizer plants should be carried out to improve efficiency and lower prices, ultimately easing the burden on our farmers,” Prasetyo said after the meeting on Thursday.

Responding to the instruction, Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said his ministry would immediately follow up with concrete actions on the ground. He noted that revitalizing fertilizer plants is key to achieving food self-sufficiency through stronger domestic production capacity.

“We are ready to implement President Prabowo’s directive. Revitalizing fertilizer plants will make production more efficient, stabilize supply, and make fertilizers more affordable. This aligns with the government’s broader goal of achieving food sovereignty,” Amran said.

As part of the initial measures, Pupuk Indonesia has prepared 1.2 million tons of subsidized fertilizer for the upcoming October–March 2025/2026 planting season, equivalent to 259 percent of the government’s minimum stock requirement. The company has also allocated 480,000 tons of non-subsidized fertilizer to meet additional farmer demand.

The Agriculture Ministry expressed optimism that the fertilizer plant revitalization program will serve as a milestone in strengthening the national agricultural sector. With a more modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly production system, the ministry expects lower agricultural production costs and improved farmer welfare.
