Indonesia, Japan Ink $47m Train Spare Part Purchase Deal
Jakarta. KAI Commuter, a subsidiary of the state-owned railway company KAI, recently signed a deal with Japan’s JR East Rail Car Technology & Maintenance (JRTM) for the purchase of train spare parts worth Rp 734 billion (approximately $47 million).
The signed agreement is a multi-year deal that spans 2024-2027.
“This agreement is to make sure the availability of the spare parts, as well as a well-managed maintenance of the facilities for KAI Commuter’s operational needs over the next three years,” KAI Commuter’s president director Asdo Artriviyanto was quoted as saying in a recent press statement.
According to Asdo, KAI Commuter and JRTM Japan signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in other fields, including extending the lifetime for the JR 205 series railway, exchange of experts, training and knowledge transfer, and management of spare parts services, among others.
“We have worked with Japan on spare part procurement and employee competency development over the past five years,” Asdo said.
KAI Commuter today carries over 1 million passengers a day. It has set a goal to increase the daily ridership to 2 million passengers.
Earlier this year, KAI Commuter also agreed to import three sets of trains worth totaling Rp 783 billion from the Chinese railway manufacturer CRRC Sifang.
