Jakarta. Twelve people, including two children, were injured after an escalator at Duri Station in Jakarta suddenly reversed direction on Saturday, causing passengers to lose their balance and fall.

The escalator was carrying passengers upward when it abruptly reversed, triggering the accident.

KAI Commuter, which operates Jakarta's commuter rail service, said all 12 injured passengers received medical attention, either at the station's health post or at nearby hospitals.

“As soon as the incident was reported, officers at Duri Station immediately responded and provided assistance with the evacuation,” KAI Commuter Corporate Secretary VP Karina Amanda said.

“All passengers who suffered injuries were assisted to the health post for examination and initial treatment.”

Karina said two children were among those injured. Five of the 12 victims required further treatment at Duta Indah Hospital.

“We will continue monitoring the condition of all affected passengers and provide assistance according to their needs,” she said.

Following the incident, KAI Commuter immediately took the escalator out of service and covered it with a tarpaulin. The surrounding area was also secured to prevent passengers from accessing the equipment.

The company's technical team is inspecting the escalator to determine what caused it to reverse direction and to ensure it is safe before being returned to service.
