Arun LPG Terminal Upgraded, Strengthening Aceh and N. Sumatra Energy
Jakarta. Pertamina Patra Niaga has officially inaugurated the revitalized Arun LPG Terminal in Lhokseumawe, Aceh, strengthening energy infrastructure and ensuring a stable liquified petroleum gas supply for households and industries across Aceh and northern Sumatra.
Engineering & Onshore Infrastructure Director Hari Purnomo said on Tuesday that the launch marks the completion of a multiyear upgrade that began in 2017, bringing the terminal to a higher operational standard.
The terminal supplies both subsidized and non-subsidized LPG to Aceh and the northern Sumatra. As of August 2025, daily distribution averaged 476 metric tons in which 1 metric ton equals to 1,000 kilograms of LPG, reflecting rising demand in the two provinces.
The inauguration on Nov. 24 involved Pertamina Patra Niaga executives Hari Purnomo and Harsono Budi Santoso, Perta Arun Gas President Director Yan Syukharial, and Lhokseumawe Mayor Sayuti Abubakar.
Hari said the revamped facility transforms Aceh’s LPG supply chain. Previously, shipments had to pass through multiple stages, from Tanjung Uban to mid-size vessels, smaller feeder ships, and finally truck distribution. The new setup allows large VLGC vessels to dock directly at Arun, reducing logistics costs and boosting efficiency.
The terminal is also set to strengthen its role as a distribution hub for Aceh and northern Sumatra, including load-transfer operations and supply routes to Pangkalan Susu, Dumai, and Tanjung Uban.
Aceh Provincial Energy Office Secretary Endra, conveying remarks from Governor Muzakir Manaf, highlighted the project’s regional significance, stating that the upgrade reflects a shared commitment to safer and more efficient public services.
“This project not only improves LPG distribution quality, but also opens economic opportunities through industrial activity, job creation, and a stronger domestic energy supply chain,” Endra said.
Lhokseumawe Mayor Sayuti Abubakar added that the upgraded terminal brings direct benefits to local communities. “I hope the company involves local workers and local businesses so economic growth in Lhokseumawe can improve and unemployment can decline,” he said.
