Jakarta. The Indonesian government has praised social media platforms X and Bigo Live for complying with new national regulations restricting children’s access to digital services, while warning other platforms to follow suit.

Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid said on Saturday that both global platforms had shown full cooperation in adhering to Government Regulation No. 17/2025 on the governance of electronic systems for child protection.

“We appreciate platforms that have fully cooperated in meeting compliance obligations, namely X and Bigo Live,” Meutya said in a statement.

According to the government, X has officially raised its minimum user age to 16, as reflected on its help center page, and has committed to deactivating underage accounts starting March 28, 2026.

Bigo Live, meanwhile, has set a minimum age requirement of 18+ in its privacy policy and strengthened multi-layered moderation using artificial intelligence alongside human oversight to filter underage users.

Meutya said other platforms operating in Indonesia are required to implement similar measures, stressing that the government will not compromise on child safety in the digital space.

“I emphasize that there is no room for compromise on compliance for operating in Indonesia,” she said.

The government will continue daily monitoring of digital platforms, Meutya added, warning that authorities will not hesitate to impose firm administrative sanctions on companies that fail to fully comply.

Age verification on global platforms has long been criticized as a formality that can be easily bypassed by minors, increasing exposure to harmful content, cyberbullying, and the misuse of personal data.

By requiring platforms to proactively identify and deactivate underage accounts, the government aims to create a safer online ecosystem in which responsibility for child protection is no longer borne solely by parents, but becomes a core obligation of service providers.
