Prabowo, Cardinal Suharyo Hold Talks on Unity Ahead of Election
Jakarta. Presidential hopeful Prabowo Subianto discussed the upcoming 2024 presidential election with Ignatius Cardinal Suharyo, as well as members of the Bishops’ Conference of Indonesia (KWI) in Jakarta recently.
According to Cardinal Suharyo, Prabowo talked of his commitment to preserving unity among the people ahead of the 2024 election.
“Mr. Prabowo Subianto mainly talked of preserving unity. This includes an honest election, quoting Mr. Prabowo’s words, a good, fair [election],” Cardinal Suharyo told reporters shortly after the meeting.
“The Catholic Church’s main scope is faith, nothing else. Based on that, we encourage all Catholics to strive for the common good in their respective roles,” Cardinal Suharyo said.
He acknowledged that there might be different political choices within a Catholic Church.
“But we, church heads, cannot take sides because our job is to keep people united. If we take sides, then we will lose our role as someone who unites the community,” Cardinal Suharyo said.
“We will support anyone who gets lawfully elected,” he told the press.
