Aceh Flood Response: Public Kitchens Deliver Over 562,000 Meal Packs
Aceh. The impact of severe flooding across Aceh continues to disrupt daily life as dozens of districts remain paralyzed. Despite the challenges, nutrition service units under the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) are still pushing relief efforts on the ground.
Of the 470 kitchens (SPPG) operating in the province, 164 are running normally, while 105 have been converted into general public kitchens. Another 161 remain shut due to operational constraints, and 47 units are currently unaccounted for because of power outages and damaged telecommunications.
“In total, 161 SPPG remain unable to operate due to various obstacles, and 47 cannot be assessed at all because electricity and communication lines are down,” Aceh Regional SPPG Head Mustafa Kamal said in a report from Banda Aceh on Sunday.
Even with the closures, the converted public kitchens have redirected assistance from school beneficiaries to flood-affected residents. As of December 7, these kitchens had distributed 562,676 meal packages.
Conditions are most severe in Aceh Tamiang and Bener Meriah. All 11 units in Bener Meriah have stopped operating, while 30 units in Aceh Tamiang remain unassessed due to total communication and power blackouts.
In Northern Aceh, 32 of 42 units have halted operations, while 12 have been turned into public kitchens and only one is functioning normally. The situation in Aceh Tengah remains uncertain: 12 units have stopped, two are now public kitchens, and six cannot yet be assessed due to network disruptions.
Across Eastern Aceh, 19 units have shut down, 11 have shifted to kitchen operations, two are functioning normally, and six remain unverified. In Bireun, 17 units have halted operations, and 21 are running as public kitchens.
President Prabowo Subianto on Sunday visited two operating units in Bireun: SPPG Bireun Kuala Lancok-Lancok (Yayasan Babul Hidayah Aceh) and SPPG Bireun Kota Juang Geulanggang Baro 2 (Yayasan Hajjah Khuzaijah Affan Mutiara Anak Bangsa), according to Kamal.
In Pidie, 24 of 43 units are functioning normally, eight have become public kitchens, and 11 are not operating. Langsa remains one of the hardest-hit urban areas, with 17 of its 19 units still unable to operate and the remaining two turned into public kitchens.
In Aceh Besar, 20 units are running normally, eight have switched to kitchen operations, and nine remain shut. Aceh Tenggara shows a more stable picture, with 24 out of 28 units functioning normally and four converted into public kitchens, none have ceased operations.
In Banda Aceh, 7 of 27 units remain non-operational, 10 are running normally, and 10 have redirected their services to flood-affected communities.
