Yusril Ihza Mahendra Anticipates Appointment as Chief Law and Human Rights Minister Following Talks with Prabowo
Jakarta. After meeting with President-elect Prabowo Subianto on Monday, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, former chairman of the Crescent Star Party (PBB), said that he is expected to be appointed as the Chief Minister of Law and Human Rights.
Yusril indicated that Prabowo plans to split the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs into two separate ministries: the Coordinating Minister for Law and Human Rights and the Coordinating Minister for Politics and Security.
He said that his selection for the role is based on his experience in legal and human rights issues, having previously served as Minister of Law and Human Rights from 2001 to 2004 in former President Megawati Sukarnoputri's cabinet.
"My field has been dealing with law and human rights. Now, it has been elevated to include a chief minister for law and human rights, whose responsibilities encompass law, human rights, and other internal government institutions," he said at Prabowo's residence in South Jakarta on Monday.
As of Monday evening, Prabowo had engaged in one-on-one interviews with 49 candidates for ministerial positions.
Notable figures who attended the interviews include party leaders Zulkifli Hasan, chair of the National Mandate Party (PAN); Bahlil Lahadalia, chairman of Golkar; Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, chair of the Democratic Party; and Muhaimin Iskandar, chairman of the National Awakening Party (PKB), who was also a former running mate of presidential candidate Anies Baswedan, who competed against Prabowo in the 2014 election.
Other important candidates include Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani, Investment Minister Rosan P. Roeslani, human rights activist Natalius Pigai, and Veronica Tan, the ex-wife of former Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama.
Prabowo is anticipated to unveil his cabinet shortly after his inauguration as Indonesia’s 8th president on October 20. Reports indicate that the cabinet will consist of 46 ministries, including 41 sectoral ministries and five coordinating ministries.
