Jakarta. The Jakarta Traffic Police launched a two-week operation on Monday across Greater Jakarta, focusing on common traffic violations, including the growing issue of motorists using fake diplomatic license plates to avoid police checks.

There have been numerous cases of car owners illegally using counterfeit VIP license plates, intended for high-ranking state officials or security officers, to gain special privileges.

The use of fake diplomatic plates -- marked with the letters "CD" (corps diplomatique) or "CC" (corps consulaire) -- has also seen a recent surge, according to Chief Commissioner Latif Usman, director of the Jakarta Traffic Police.

"Many people have been using fake diplomatic license plates. We have received complaints from several embassies regarding the illegal use of their plates by unauthorized individuals, and we are taking this matter seriously," Latif said.

The operation, named Operation Zebra Jaya, will deploy 2,939 officers across Jakarta and its neighboring cities -- Bekasi, Depok, and Tangerang.

In addition to cracking down on fake diplomatic plates, the Jakarta Police have identified 13 other key traffic offenses to target during the operation, including:

1. Unauthorized use of rotator lights and sirens,
2. Unauthorized use of government license plates,
3. Underage driving or riding,
4. Driving against the flow of traffic,
5. Driving under the influence,
6. Distracted driving due to cellphone use,
7. Failure to wear a seatbelt,
8. Speeding,
9. Overloading motorcycles,
10. Unroadworthy vehicles,
11. Lack of safety equipment,
12. Absence of valid vehicle registration documents,
13. Violating designated traffic lanes.
