Police Arrest Man After Video of Woman Kicked at Jakarta Mall Goes Viral
Jakarta. Police have arrested a 44-year-old man after a video showing him kicking a woman from behind at a shopping mall in Central Jakarta went viral on social media.
The suspect, identified by police only as RS, was detained by investigators from the Jakarta Metropolitan Police's criminal investigation unit early Friday, two days after the incident at the food court of Senayan City mall.
“The motive is still being investigated because he was only detained early Friday. Regarding alcohol, he was not under its influence and had not consumed alcoholic drinks,” Jakarta police spokesman Budi Hermanto said Friday.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when the victim was standing in line at a food stall. RS, who was sitting behind her, allegedly kicked her, causing her to fall to the ground. Police said the victim suffered psychological distress and severe trauma following the incident. She reportedly did not know RS.
The police have arranged psychological assistance for the victim and advised her to undergo a forensic medical examination to determine whether she sustained physical injuries from the fall.
Investigators have questioned several witnesses, including food court management staff and relatives of the suspect who were at the location.
“We must protect the psychological condition of the victim, who is still in shock. The Jakarta Metropolitan Police is providing trauma-healing assistance,” Budi said. “If there are injuries or other physical trauma, we will request a forensic medical examination.”
Police have also seized closed-circuit television footage from the mall to analyze the incident and establish a clearer timeline.
The Jakarta police urged the public to allow investigators to conduct a comprehensive investigation based on physical evidence and witness testimony.
