Bomb Threat Shuts Down Jakarta Elementary School, Students Sent Home
Jakarta. Indonesian police deployed a bomb disposal unit to an elementary school in South Jakarta on Monday after the school received a bomb threat via WhatsApp, forcing the suspension of first-day orientation activities and the early dismissal of students.
The threat targeted SDN Srengseng Sawah 15, a public elementary school in the Jagakarsa district of South Jakarta.
Jagakarsa Police Chief Commissioner Nurma confirmed that authorities received a report after a first-grade teacher was sent threatening messages through WhatsApp.
"The bomb threat was sent via WhatsApp to one of the first-grade teachers," Nurma said.
According to police, the sender contacted the teacher twice and claimed that explosive devices had been planted in 11 locations around the school compound.
Following the report, officers from the Jagakarsa Police and the Indonesian National Police's Gegana Bomb Disposal Unit were dispatched to the scene to secure the area and conduct a thorough search of the school premises.
"The Gegana team is still carrying out the search," Nurma said.
Police cordoned off the school while bomb disposal officers inspected classrooms and other areas to ensure no explosive devices were present.
As a precaution, the school canceled the first day of its student orientation program (MPLS) and sent students home early while the search operation continued.
No explosives had been found as of the time of publication, and no injuries were reported.
Police have launched an investigation to identify the person responsible for the threat. Investigators are tracing the phone number and WhatsApp account used to send the messages.
Authorities have not disclosed whether they believe the threat was credible, and the search of the school was still underway at the time of reporting.
