Tight Security as KPU Prepares to Declare Prabowo-Gibran as President and Vice President Elect
Jakarta. The General Election Commission (KPU) will formally declare Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka as the president and vice president-elect of the 2024 Presidential Election on Wednesday at 10.00 a.m. Jakarta time.
To ensure the smooth running of the plenary meeting process, the police tightened security with several layers of protection in the KPU office area on Imam Bonjol Street, Menteng, Central Jakarta.
The Central Jakarta Metro Police Chief, Susatyo Purnomo Condro, said 4,266 joint personnel from the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the National Police were deployed to guard the ceremony.
"We all hope that all the plenary activities can proceed safely and smoothly," said Susatyo in front of the KPU office on Wednesday.
The Central Jakarta Metro Police have closed off roads around the KPU office since Tuesday evening. Iron barriers have been installed to sterilize the road in front of the KPU office.
He urged the public who want to witness the designation process of Prabowo-Gibran as president and vice president for 2024 to watch it on television. The public does not need to come to or approach the KPU office.
"If there are people who come, we hope they do not approach the KPU because we must maintain the solemnity of the plenary session," he added.
Former KPU chairman Juri Ardiantoro, was also seen being denied entry as he did not bring an invitation. Juri is currently active as a member of the Prabowo-Gibran National Campaign Team. Juri claimed that he had the invitation, but it was brought by his team who had entered earlier. However, strict security at the barricades still prevented Juri from entering.
The KPU has invited all three pairs of presidential and vice-presidential candidates to attend the declaration ceremony. However, KPU commissioner August Mellaz revealed that they have not received confirmation of attendance from the Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar and Ganjar Pranowo-Mohammad Mahfud MD pairs.
The Constitutional Court on Monday affirmed Prabowo Subianto's victory in the February 14 presidential election. The court rejected a motion by Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo, who demanded a vote annulment, citing insufficient legal grounds and evidence.
Prabowo and Gibran will be inaugurated on October 20, 2024.
