Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin has extended his congratulations to Prabowo Subianto for his "convincing victory" in the presidential election and expressed optimism for strengthened bilateral ties with Indonesia under the future president.

Putin’s congratulatory message for Prabowo was published on the Kremlin website, as reported by the state news agency TASS on Friday.

"Dear Mr. Prabowo Subianto, please accept my sincere congratulations on your convincing victory in the presidential election. Indonesian-Russian relations are built on benevolent traditions of friendship and mutual respect, successfully evolving in various areas," Putin said.

He further expressed confidence that Prabowo’s leadership would contribute to the continued development of the entire spectrum of Russian-Indonesian cooperation, "for the benefit of both countries' citizens and in the interests of strengthening security and stability in the Asia-Pacific region."

"I am counting on a constructive dialogue with you and fruitful joint work on topical issues on the bilateral and international agenda," Putin added.

Recent quick counts by major pollsters have confirmed Prabowo’s decisive victory in the February 14 presidential election. The ongoing official tally by election organizers also indicates that he will secure approximately 57 percent of the vote.

If the current results hold, Prabowo is set to be inaugurated as Indonesia’s eighth president on October 20.
