Prabowo Plans Meetings with Election Rivals
Jakarta. Presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto, who appears poised to win the election according to independent quick counts, has initiated plans to meet with rival candidates and their coalition members, an aide said on Friday.
During his victory speech after major pollsters published quick count results indicating his landslide win on Wednesday evening, Prabowo pledged to be "the president for all Indonesian citizens" and expressed a commitment to reconciliation with rivals for national unity.
Ahmad Muzani, the secretary-general of Prabowo’s Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra), said post-election communications have been established with rival coalitions supporting presidential candidates Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo.
"It’s still in the early stages, but we continue to communicate with our friends from coalitions for candidates number 1 and 3,” Muzani stated in Jakarta, referring to the ballot numbers representing Anies and Ganjar.
"Prabowo has informed us of the plan to visit some prominent figures who don’t support his candidacy. He didn’t provide details, but basically, it involves the coalitions supporting candidates number 1 and 3.”
Separately in Solo, Prabowo’s running mate, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, also expressed the intention to meet in person with rival candidates.
“As soon as they allow me a chance to do so,” Gibran replied when asked about the timing of the meetings. “I sincerely hope that we can meet and talk in a casual setting during breakfast or over coffee cups.”
Gibran has returned from Jakarta after the election to resume duties as the mayor of the Central Java town.
Interim official tally by the General Election Commission (KPU) indicates that Prabowo and Gibran are leading with 57 percent of the vote as of Friday evening.
