Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto has instructed National Police Chief Suyudi Ario Seto to take firm action against three police generals implicated in an alleged illegal wiretapping case involving unauthorized access to and deletion of electronic data.

One of the suspects is former presidential chief of staff and national police chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo, who was among the senior officials allegedly involved in the case.

State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi said on Wednesday that Prabowo had ordered law enforcement authorities to handle the investigation objectively and in accordance with the law, without concealing any information.

"The president has instructed the police chief to ensure that the case is handled properly, in accordance with applicable laws and regulations, as objectively as possible and without anything being concealed," Prasetyo told reporters at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta.

He said the directive was issued after Suyudi briefed the president on the alleged illegal wiretapping operation, which reportedly targeted the head of state and several other public figures.

Prasetyo  said the alleged surveillance could have endangered the president's safety and threatened national interests.

"We believe these actions fall into a category that points toward treason, endangering national security and interests, including the safety of the country's leadership," Prasetyo told a news conference at the Presidential Palace.

The government has also coordinated with the police chief to ensure that public services provided by the police continue uninterrupted despite the investigation, he added.

Prasetyo said the government was committed to ensuring that the investigation followed the law, emphasizing that surveillance activities were subject to clear legal provisions.

"We are committed to handling this wiretapping case to reassure the public that surveillance activities are governed by the laws and regulations in place. Therefore, we want to assure the public that there is no need for concern. This involves certain individuals acting on their own," he said.

The National Police's Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) named Listyo a suspect on Tuesday in connection with allegations of illegal wiretapping, unauthorized access, and the deletion of electronic data.

Two other active police generals, Inspector General Ahrie Sonta and Inspector General Eko Hadi, were also named suspects. Another individual is being questioned as a witness.

In response to the case, Prabowo removed Listyo from his position as presidential chief of staff and appointed Ariyo Windutomo as acting head of the Presidential Staff Office.
