Jakarta. Indonesia's National Police on Tuesday declined to confirm or deny reports that several officers, including a four-star general, had been detained over allegations of unauthorized surveillance targeting the presidential office.

Unverified reports circulating Tuesday claimed that several police officers, including generals, had been taken to the Mobile Brigade Corps (Brimob) headquarters in Depok, West Java.

However, authorities have not confirmed that any arrests or detentions took place, nor have they established a connection between the officers mentioned in the reports and the alleged surveillance operation.

National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Johnny Eddizon Isir said the force would check the information.

"We will check the evaluation process," Isir told reporters at National Police headquarters in Jakarta.

He said police would hold a press conference later Tuesday evening to provide further clarification.

Isir did not identify any officers allegedly involved, specify how many personnel were being investigated, or explain the possible violations behind the reports.

Separately, the spokesman gave a similar response when asked about allegations that several senior and mid-ranking police officers had been detained over suspected involvement in mobilizing crowds during protests that turned violent in Yogyakarta.

The National Police have yet to confirm whether any officers were detained in connection with either allegation or whether formal legal proceedings have been initiated.

Unverified accounts suggested that at least four officers had been detained, including one four-star general, two two-star generals and a senior officer holding the rank of chief commissioner.

The spokesman promised an evening briefing is expected to clarify whether the reported detentions took place and whether any investigation has been opened.
