Jakarta. Prabowo Subianto was declared as the elected president on Wednesday after the General Election Commission (KPU) certified the national results from the Feb. 14 election.

The defense minister, who teams up with President Joko Widodo’s eldest son Gibran Rakabuming Raka as his running mate, won by 58.59 percent of the vote, meaning that a runoff is not necessary.

His sweeping victory was demonstrated by leading in 36 out of all 38 provinces. Prabowo only lost in Aceh and West Sumatra to his closest rival Anies Baswedan.

The KPU said the presidential election received 164.2 million legitimate votes from registered voters in 38 provinces and 128 Indonesian overseas missions.

Presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo and his ticket mate Mohammad Mahfud MD, who were nominated by the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), got only 27.04 million votes.

The certification of results from the presidential election was conducted simultaneously with results from the legislative election at the KPU headquarters in Central Jakarta.
