Pope Francis to Meet President-Elect Prabowo Subianto
Jakarta. Pope Francis is set to meet President-Elect Prabowo Subianto as part of his Jakarta tour, but the details of this meeting still remain vague.
Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas unveiled the plans not long after welcoming the pope’s arrival at the Soekarno-Hatta airport on Tuesday. The minister told reporters that the state protocols were arranging the meeting.
“Well, there are plans for Pope Francis to see Prabowo in one of the meetings. But we will ask the state protocols for the technical details,” Yaqut said.
The minister claimed that he forgot about the details of the Prabowo-Pope Francis talks. However, the meeting is also included in the papal visit’s agenda, according to Yaqut.
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo is scheduled to host a visit from Pope Francis at the Merdeka Palace on Wednesday. His Jakarta trip agenda also includes a visit to the Cathedral Church and an attendance to interfaith talks at the Istiqlal Mosque, among others. He will also lead a holy mass at the Gelora Bung Karno stadium on Thursday. However, the publicly disclosed schedule did not include a meeting with Prabowo.
The pope will be in Jakarta until Friday.
