Police Complete Identification of 7 Bodies Recovered from Bekasi River
Jakarta. The National Police announced on Thursday that forensic teams have successfully identified all seven bodies, mostly teenagers, recovered from the Bekasi River four days earlier.
Two of the bodies were claimed by family members on Tuesday, while the remaining five were handed over to relatives at the Kramat Jati Police Hospital in East Jakarta on Thursday afternoon.
Brig. Gen. Prima Heru Yuliartono, head of the hospital, expressed his condolences to the families and thanked them for their patience during the identification process, which required DNA samples and fingerprint records.
“We prioritized accuracy over speed in the identification process,” Prima said.
The first two victims were earlier identified as Muhammad Rizky, 19, and Ahmad Dafi, 16, based on their personal belongings, dental records, and fingerprints, all of which were confirmed by their families.
On Thursday, the identities of the remaining five victims were confirmed as Muhammad Farhan (20), Rizky Ramadhan (15), Ridho Darmawan (15), Rizky Dwi Cahyo (16), and Vino Satriani (15).
None of the victims were carrying identification when their bodies were recovered from the river in Bekasi, a Jakarta suburb, on Sunday morning.
Jakarta Police Chief Insp. Gen. Karyoto suggested that the deaths may be linked to a mass arrest of teenagers suspected of involvement in a gang fight, according to witness accounts.
The seven youths reportedly attempted to flee from a police chase by jumping into the river after dozens of their peers were arrested on Saturday evening.
Police have questioned 17 officers and 10 witnesses to clarify the circumstances leading to the deaths.
The Bekasi River is known to be treacherous in certain areas due to whirlpools and deeper sections, posing a serious danger to those without swimming skills.
