PDI-P Could Become Sole Opposition to Prabowo Coalition
Jakarta. The ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) may find itself in the role of sole opposition in the coming months as Prabowo Subianto prepares to assume the presidency, according to an analyst.
The PDI-P, which has been the driving force behind the current government, has found itself at odds with President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, particularly after his son became the running mate for Prabowo.
The party nominated former Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo for president and demanded full support for its nominee from Jokowi and his son, both of whom are party executives.
However, Jokowi's son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, garnered support from the rival Golkar Party to become Prabowo’s ticket mate, resulting in their victory.
This unexpected turn of events has led some prominent members of the PDI-P to advocate for an opposition stance against the future Prabowo government, even if it means being the only party to do so.
The possibility of being the lone opposition is becoming more apparent, especially after the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) signaled its intention to support Prabowo.
Political analyst Ujang Komaruddin expressed concern about having the PDI-P as the sole opposition, stating that it could be detrimental to democracy.
“A strong government requires an equally strong opposition to ensure a healthy democracy,” Ujang commented. “PKS would provide balance if it chose to align with the PDI-P on the opposition side.”
In the February 14 presidential election, PKS, the National Democratic Party (Nasdem), and the National Awakening Party (PKB) formed a coalition and nominated former Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan. However, following Prabowo's victory, Nasdem and PKB swiftly signaled their intention to join the pro-government coalition.
According to Ujang, a supermajority supporting Prabowo would enable effective and stable governance.
Even if PKS and PDI-P decline to join the pro-government coalition, Prabowo would still have the support of six parties, collectively controlling nearly 75 percent of the seats in the House of Representatives.
