Palestine’s Mahmoud Abbas Congratulates Prabowo on Election Victory
Jakarta. Prabowo Subianto recently got another congratulatory message from world leaders for his likely election win -- this time coming from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
Prabowo uploaded the congratulatory letter on the social media platform X on Thursday night. In that letter, Palestine’s Abbas congratulated Prabowo on “earning the trust of the brotherly people of Indonesia and winning the presidential elections.”
“Our two countries are bound by strong historical fraternal relations, and we are committed to working with Your Excellency towards further development and enhancing avenues of cooperation and coordination between us, opening new horizons,” Abbas wrote in the letter.
“We also express our great appreciation for Indonesia’s steadfast support for the Palestinian cause and its people,” Abbas said.
In his post, Prabowo said it was an “honor” to receive the congratulatory message from Abbas while saying that Indonesia would remain supportive of Palestine.
“The Indonesian people will always stand with Palestine in its toughest times. We will always support the Palestinian people’s struggle to achieve peace and independence,” Prabowo said.
The General Election Commission (KPU) is still counting the votes from the nationwide elections that took place last month. However, preliminary results put Prabowo on a huge lead against fellow contenders Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo behind. KPU will announce the official election results by March 20. Prabowo’s running mate is Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the incumbent President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s eldest son.
Indonesia has been vocal about its support for Palestine as the Gaza conflict intensifies. The Southeast Asian country recently called on Israel to withdraw its military forces from Palestinian territories during a recent public hearing at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
