London. Janice Tjen produced one of the biggest upsets of the opening round at Wimbledon, defeating 22nd seed and former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez of Canada 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) on Monday to reach the second round in her first appearance at the All England Club.

The 24-year-old needed just one hour and 29 minutes to secure a memorable victory over Fernandez, the 2021 US Open runner-up, marking the biggest Grand Slam win of her career.

Janice seized control from the outset, breaking Fernandez's serve in the opening game before earning two more service breaks to race to a 5-1 lead in the first set.

She closed out the set 6-1 by breaking the Canadian once again, capitalizing on a series of unforced errors from the 22nd seed.

The second set proved far more competitive as both players held serve throughout, forcing a tiebreak after the score reached 6-6.

Janice remained composed under pressure, quickly taking control of the tiebreak before sealing victory 7-3 to complete a straight-sets triumph.

The match statistics highlighted Tjen's impressive performance. She fired six aces without committing a double fault, struck 24 winners, and limited herself to just 10 unforced errors.

Fernandez finished with five aces and three double faults. Although she produced 20 winners, she was undone by 22 unforced errors and failed to convert any of her break-point opportunities.

Janice, by contrast, converted three of her nine break-point chances, underlining her efficiency at key moments.

The victory sends the Indonesian into the second round, where she will face Australia's Daria Kasatkina.

Janice is also scheduled to compete in the women's doubles alongside fellow Indonesian Aldila Sutjiadi. The pair will open their campaign on Thursday against Britain's Harriet Dart and Scotland's Maia Lumsden.
