Melbourne. Indonesian tennis player Janice Tjen opened her Australian Open campaign with a notable upset on Tuesday, marking her second consecutive Grand Slam appearance in which she advanced beyond the first round.

In Melbourne, the unseeded 23-year-old defeated 22nd seed Leylah Fernandez of Canada 6–2, 7–6 (1) in one hour and 43 minutes to book a place in the second round.

The victory follows a similar breakthrough at the US Open last year, where Janice also won her opening match, defeating 24th seed Veronika Kudermetova.

Janice is the first Indonesian woman to reach the second round of the Australian Open since Yayuk Basuki in 1998. That year, Yayuk went on to make a deep run, reaching the fourth round.

“I’m very happy to be a part of history and be able to get a win here for Indonesia,” Janice was quoted as saying on the Women’s Tennis Association website.

“I think it was special, especially being able to do it in front of my family here. They’re here, and I think there were a lot of Indonesians, and a lot of my close friends are also here,” she said.

Janice has won one WTA Tour singles title and three doubles titles. Her career-high rankings stand at No. 53 in singles and No. 84 in doubles, both achieved in November last year.
