Janice Tjen Advances to WTA 500 Monterrey Open Last 16
Jakarta. Indonesian tennis player Janice Tjen advanced to the last 16 of the WTA 500 Monterrey Open after overcoming Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska in a three-set battle on Tuesday.
The seventh-seeded Janice defeated Yastremska 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) on the hard courts in Monterrey, Mexico, in a match that lasted two hours and 17 minutes, according to the WTA.
Yastremska made the stronger start, breaking Janice’s serve twice to take control of the opening set. The Ukrainian held her advantage to close it out 6-2.
Janice, 24, responded in the second set by raising her level. After the pair exchanged holds early on, the Jakarta-born player broke Yastremska in the seventh game to move ahead 4-3.
She secured another break in the eighth game before serving out the set 6-3 to force a decider.
The third set was tightly contested. Janice fell 0-2 after surrendering her serve in the second game but fought back to level the score at 3-3.
The players then traded breaks, with the score eventually tied at 5-5. Both held serve in the next two games, sending the match into a deciding tiebreak at 6-6.
Janice kept her composure in the crucial moments. After the tiebreak was tied at 5-5, she won the next two points to seal the match 7-6(5).
Janice fired 12 aces, compared with four by Yastremska, and won 98 of 188 total points, or 52.1 percent. She converted four of eight break-point opportunities, while Yastremska converted five of 10.
The victory capped a strong day for Janice, who had earlier secured a place in the doubles quarterfinals alongside Poland’s Katarzyna Piter.
The Janice-Piter pair defeated second seeds Shuai Zhang and Xinyu Jiang 6-2, 6-7(5), 10-7.
Janice will face another Ukrainian, Yuliia Starodubtseva, in the singles last 16. Starodubtseva advanced after beating Austria’s Lili Tagger in straight sets.
In the doubles quarterfinals, Janice and Piter will take on Australia’s Maya Joint and China’s Xu Yifan on Wednesday.
