Jakarta. Tennis player Janice Tjen has made history by breaking into the world top 50 rankings, following in the footsteps of Yayuk Basuki, Indonesia's highest-ranked player ever.

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) announced Janice’s rise to No. 47 this week, a jump of 12 places fueled by her performance at the 2026 Australian Open. She stunned fans with a straight-sets victory over 22nd-seeded Canadian Leylah Fernandez, winning 6-2, 7-6 (1) in just over an hour and 40 minutes at Melbourne’s ANZ Arena. The achievement equaled Basuki’s best US Open singles performance, reaching the second round in 1991 and 1997.

For Janice, this marks her second Grand Slam match win and her first at the Australian Open. She is also the first Indonesian player to win a main-draw match at Melbourne since Yayuk, who reached the fourth round in 1998.

“I’m very happy to be a part of history and be able to get a win here for Indonesia,” Janice said in her post-match press conference. “I think it was special, especially being able to do it in front of my family here. They're here, and I think there were a lot of Indonesians, and a lot of my close friends are also here.”

Janice’s rise comes on the heels of her first WTA title, which she captured at the WTA 250 Chennai Open in India in November 2025. She became the first Indonesian woman in over two decades to claim a WTA 250 singles title, joining Yayuk, who reached a career-high No. 19 in 1997 and the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

Born in Jakarta on May 6, 2002, Janice showed an early talent for tennis. She honed her skills in junior tournaments before moving to the United States, where she played for Pepperdine University and reached the NCAA finals, a notable achievement for college athletes.

Janice’s professional career has been marked by consistency and impressive wins. By 2025, she recorded 77 victories against just 15 losses. She has also won multiple international titles, including W15 and W35 tournaments across Monastir, Wanfercee-Baulet, Antalya, Wellington, Tauranga, Goyang, Andong, Maanshan, Luzhou, Taizhou, and Taipei.

In addition to her Australian Open triumph, Janice previously defeated Veronika Kudermetova in the first round of last year’s US Open, highlighting her ability to challenge top-ranked players on the global stage.

At 23, Janice Tjen is now recognized as Indonesia’s brightest tennis prospect, continuing the legacy of Yayuk Basuki while carving her own path in international tennis.
