Janice Tjen Advances to Merida Open Quarterfinals with Katarzyna Piter
Jakarta. Indonesian tennis player Janice Tjen and her Polish partner Katarzyna Piter advanced to the doubles quarterfinals of the Mérida Open after defeating Madeleine Brooks and Shuo Feng 7-6(8), 6-3 on Wednesday.
In their opening-round match, Tjen and Piter edged a tightly contested first set in a tiebreak before taking control in the second to secure a straight-sets victory.
The opening set was evenly matched, with Tjen and Piter leaning on their serve. They landed 71.8 percent of first serves and won 42.9 percent of those points, according to WTA statistics.
Brooks and Feng held an edge on returns, winning 57.1 percent of first-serve return points and 63.6 percent on second-serve returns, while converting all four of their break-point chances. Despite the pressure, Tjen and Piter capitalized on key moments to clinch the set.
The Indonesian-Polish duo raised their level in the second set, winning 61.1 percent of first-serve points and dominating on first-serve returns at 57.7 percent, compared with their opponents’ 38.9 percent.
Tjen and Piter, who previously won the WTA 250 Guangzhou doubles title, converted four of nine break-point opportunities to close out the match.
They will face Marie Bouzkova and Ann Li in the quarterfinals on Friday at 6:50 a.m. local time.
Bouzkova and Li advanced after defeating Indonesian doubles specialist Aldila Sutjiadi and her Mexican partner Giuliana Olmos 6-3, 6-1.
The doubles run gives Tjen another chance to contend for a title after her singles campaign ended earlier with a 4-6, 3-6 loss to Colombia’s Camila Osorio.
