Jakarta. Indonesian tennis player Janice Tjen, 23, has secured the sixth seed in the singles draw at the Merida Open in Mexico and will open her campaign against Colombia’s Camila Osorio in the first round of the WTA 500 tournament, which runs from Feb. 23 to March 1.

Osorio, currently ranked world No. 62, is a three-time WTA 250 Bogotá champion, including back-to-back titles. She is set to face Janice in Tuesday’s opening-round match, or Wednesday in Jakarta time.

Janice, who climbed to a career-high world No. 46 last week, enters the tournament as the sixth seed and is expected to pose a strong challenge in the draw.

In doubles, Janice will partner Poland’s Katarzyna Piter to take on Madeleine Brooks and Shuo Feng in the opening round.

Janice enjoyed a breakthrough 2025 season, reaching the WTA 250 final in Sao Paulo before winning her first WTA Tour singles title in Chennai — becoming the first Indonesian to claim a WTA singles crown since Angelique Widjaja triumphed in Pattaya City in 2002. During that period, her ranking surged from No. 411 to No. 53.

She also captured her first two doubles titles in Guangzhou (with Piter) and Chennai (with Aldila Sutjiadi), won the WTA 125 title in Jinan, and collected six ITF singles trophies in the first half of the season.

Before heading to Mexico, Janice advanced to the round of 16 at the Dubai Tennis Championships. She previously exited in the round of 32 at the Qatar Open, where she fell to world No. 1 Iga Swiatek and later lost to fifth seed Liudmila Samsonova.

Earlier this year, Janice secured her first Grand Slam main-draw victory at the Australian Open. She became the first Indonesian to win a main-draw match in Melbourne since Yayuk Basuki reached the fourth round in 1998.

Janice also made history by breaking into the world’s top 50, following in the footsteps of Basuki, Indonesia’s highest-ranked player ever. She advanced to the last 16 in Dubai after defeating Canadian star Leylah Fernandez, underlining her growing presence on the WTA Tour.
