Jakarta Orders Remote Learning as Anak Krakatau Ash Threatens Air Quality
Jakarta. Jakarta will shift all schools and educational institutions to remote learning starting Monday, Sept. 7, as a precaution against potential exposure to volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau.
The policy, which will remain in effect until further notice, applies to public and private institutions ranging from early childhood education centers to elementary, junior high, senior high and vocational schools, as well as special schools and community learning centers.
The Jakarta Education Agency introduced the measure through Circular No. 91/SE/2026, issued on Sept. 5, as authorities monitor the spread of volcanic ash following increased activity at Mount Anak Krakatau.
Volcanic ash consists of fine particles of rock, minerals and other material produced by an eruption. When airborne, the particles can be inhaled and may pose health risks, particularly to children and other vulnerable groups.
Chico Hakim, a special adviser to Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung, said the policy was intended to protect students while allowing classes to continue.
“Children must continue learning, but in a safe environment. That is why learning will temporarily take place from home,” Chico said.
School principals have been instructed to oversee remote classes and provide alternatives if technical problems arise. Schools facing difficulties can seek assistance through local education authorities.
The Jakarta administration has also urged residents to remain alert if volcanic ash reaches the capital, including by wearing masks, limiting outdoor activities and wetting ash before cleaning it to prevent particles from becoming airborne.
Authorities are monitoring volcanic ash distribution and air quality in coordination with Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) and health officials.
The remote-learning policy will be reviewed as conditions evolve, with further updates to be issued by the Jakarta administration.
