Jakarta MRT Phase 2A on Track for 2029 Full Operation
Jakarta. Jakarta is pushing ahead with the expansion of its Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) network, with construction of the Phase 2A line linking the Hotel Indonesia (HI) Roundabout to Kota Tua (Old Town) progressing steadily, according to city officials.
The HI Roundabout, one of Jakarta’s most iconic landmarks, will be connected directly to Kota Tua, a major historical tourism district and one of the city’s oldest urban areas.
Governor Pramono Anung said the project is on track after reviewing construction progress on Tuesday alongside Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka and Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi.
Phase 2A consists of seven underground stations: Thamrin, Monas, Harmoni, Sawah Besar, Mangga Besar, Glodok, and Kota.
He said overall progress has reached nearly 60%. The MRT Jakarta management expects the Thamrin-Monas route to begin commissioning in mid-2027, while construction in the Harmoni area is targeted for completion by the end of 2027.
He added that construction in the Sawah Besar and Mangga Besar areas is more complex because the stations there will be among the deepest in the network, reaching up to 28 meters underground.
The extension toward Kota Tua is planned to be completed by the end of 2029. Once finished, the full north-south corridor will stretch 22.2 kilometers and become fully operational in 2029.
Pramono added that work on the east-west MRT line, connecting Medan Satria in Bekasi to Tomang in West Jakarta, is also moving forward, although some sections are still in the land acquisition and route planning stage. The first phase of the east-west line is expected to start operation around 2030.
Around 3,800 Indonesian workers are currently involved in the project, reflecting the government’s push to rely on local engineering talent.
Pramono said the Vice President expressed satisfaction with the construction progress, particularly the quality of tunneling work, adding that maintaining construction standards remains a key priority as the project moves forward.
