Indonesia’s Eid Travelers Hit 147.5 Million, Beating Forecast
Jakarta. Indonesia recorded 147.55 million passenger movements during the Eid al-Fitr 2026 holiday period, surpassing earlier projection, Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said on Monday.
“For travel during Eid, the number of people who traveled reached 147.55 million, an increase of 2.53% from our survey estimate,” Dudy said after the closing of the Integrated Eid Transportation Central Post at the Transportation Ministry’s office in Jakarta.
Despite exceeding projections, this year’s travel volume was lower than in Eid al-Fitr 2025, when movements reached 154.63 million people, about 5.6% above that year’s survey estimate of 146.67 million.
The pre-Eid survey was conducted by the Transportation Ministry in collaboration with several institutions, including Bandung Institute of Technology’s Industrial Research Affiliate Institution (LAPI), Central Statistics Agency, and the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs.
Around 55,000 respondents from across Indonesia participated in the survey, which aimed to map potential travel patterns ahead of the holiday.
Dudy said the gap between projected and actual figures reflects evolving public considerations when deciding whether to travel during the festive period, adding that the ministry would further study the discrepancy.
He also highlighted an improvement in safety, with fewer transportation accidents recorded during the holiday season. From March 13-25, traffic accidents and fatalities declined by 28% to 228, down from 318 a year earlier.
Private cars and motorcycles continue to dominate travel, while public transportation also records an increase. Total rail passengers reach 1.8 million in 2026, up from 1.6 million a year earlier. Meanwhile, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport remains the busiest, with more than 2.4 million passengers passing through during the holiday period, up from 2.3 million in 2025.
