Indonesia Ends 344-Km One-Way Traffic Scheme Toward Jakarta
Jakarta. Indonesian police on Wednesday ended a 344-kilometer one-way traffic scheme on toll roads from Central Java toward Greater Jakarta, after conditions eased during the post-Eid al-Fitr return travel period.
The policy, which covered routes from Central Java to West Java, was lifted after traffic volumes were assessed to be within manageable levels and flows remained under control.
“The national one-way system from KM 414 at Kalikangkung toll gate to KM 70 at Cikampek Utama toll gate has been terminated. Traffic has returned to normal two-way operation,” the National Police traffic corps said in a statement.
Authorities had initially planned to maintain the one-way system until March 29 to manage peak return flows following the Eid holiday.
As of 9 p.m. on Wednesday, around 55,000 vehicles were recorded heading toward Jakarta via the Cikampek Utama toll gate, while more than 16,000 vehicles were traveling in the opposite direction.
Data from toll road operator Jasa Marga showed that peak post-holiday traffic toward Greater Jakarta on the Trans-Java toll road occurred on March 24, when about 106,000 vehicles were recorded -- an increase of 141% compared with normal conditions.
By comparison, traffic volumes on the previous day stood at around 75,000 vehicles.
A second wave of return traffic is expected over the weekend, though volumes are projected to be lower than the initial surge.
“We estimate that around 91,000 vehicles will pass through Cikampek Utama toll gate on March 29,” said Jasa Marga Corporate Secretary Ria Marlinda.
Separately, National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo said more than 2 million vehicles have returned to Jakarta following the Eid holiday, although hundreds of thousands more are expected to arrive in the coming days.
