Indonesia Clinches 2 Titles in All England
Jakarta. Jonatan Christie defeated compatriot Anthony Sinisuka Ginting in the All England men’s singles final, while the duo of Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto added to Indonesia's celebration by defending the men’s doubles title in Birmingham on Sunday.
These results mark Indonesia’s best haul in the All England since 2014.
Jonatan secured victory over the injured Anthony with a score of 21-15, 21-14, narrowing the gap in their head-to-head encounters in international tournaments. Jonatan has now won four out of their 10 matches.
Anthony had to pause the first game for treatment on his finger, but he was constantly trailing behind his compatriot during the final match at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham.
Their match mirrored the all-Indonesian final 30 years ago between Hariyanto Arbi and Ardy Wiranata. Since then, three Indonesians have appeared in four finals, but the gold remained elusive until Sunday.
Neither Jonatan nor Anthony had reached the tournament’s semifinals before the current edition.
"Praise be to God! I have never expected to become an All England champion. This is also my first ever title in the Super 1000 category," a jubilant Jonatan said after the match.
"It's never easy to achieve this, after years of hard work and failures in tournament after tournament and came back to the training camp to train even harder, until finally, God delivered the gift today,” he added.
Meanwhile, Fajar and Rian showcased consistency by clinching back-to-back men’s doubles titles, defeating the Malaysian duo of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in straight games, 21-16, 21-16.
In last year's tournament, Fajar and Rian emerged victorious in an all-Indonesian final against veteran players Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Marcus Fernaldi Gideon.
The last time Indonesia secured at least two All England trophies was a decade ago when Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan claimed gold in men’s doubles, and Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir won the mixed doubles title.
In other Sunday’s finals, the Japanese pair Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida clinched the women’s doubles title by defeating South Korea’s Baek Hana and Lee Sohee, Spanish player Carolina Marin secured the women’s singles gold after her Japanese opponent Akane Yamaguchi retired in the second game due to injury, and the Chinese duo Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong overcame Japan’s Yuta Watanabe and Arisha Higashino in the mixed doubles.
