Jakarta. Indonesia finished the 2026 Indonesia Open without a title despite fielding finalists in the men's singles and men's doubles events at Jakarta's Istora Senayan on Sunday.

Home favorite Jonatan Christie, appearing in his first Indonesia Open final, saw his dream of winning the prestigious tournament in front of local supporters postponed once again after suffering a straight-games defeat to Canada's rising star Victor Lai, 19-21, 8-21.

“Thank you to everyone who supported me. I'm sorry I couldn't deliver the result we all hoped for,” Jonatan said after the match.

The victory made Lai the first Canadian men's singles player to reach an Indonesia Open final and capture the title. He credited Canada's growing badminton development in part to the contribution of Indonesian coaches working in the country.

Indonesia's men's doubles pair of Raymond Indra and Nikolaus Joaquin also fell short despite strong support from a packed home crowd.

The duo lost to Malaysian pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin in a three-game battle, 13-21, 21-18, 21-10. The Malaysians admitted feeling nervous at the start due to the intense atmosphere inside the arena before taking control in the deciding game.

The defeat marked the second finals loss at Istora this year for Raymond and Nikolaus, who also finished runners-up at the Indonesia Masters.

“Today's match was an important lesson for us. Overall, I think we gave everything we had, but the Malaysian pair played exceptionally well and stayed focused throughout,” Nikolaus said.

In the women's singles final, South Korea's world No. 1 An Se-young defeated Japan's Akane Yamaguchi 23-21, 21-12 to claim her ninth BWF World Tour Super 1000 title.

“This title means so much to me. I don't know what to say -- I'm just very happy to have won so many titles,” An said.

Japan secured one title through women's doubles pair Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto, who upset Chinese world No. 1 duo Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning 21-15, 18-21, 21-18.

“Today's match was all about mentality. Whoever handled the pressure better was going to win,” Matsumoto said.

“We've played Liu and Tan many times. If we stayed too defensive, they would keep attacking us. So we decided to be aggressive, and our strategy worked.”

Denmark's mixed doubles pair Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Boje captured the title after defeating China's Cheng Xing and Zhang Chi 21-19, 23-21.

The victory extended a remarkable run for the Danish duo, who also won the Singapore Open a week earlier, adding to titles at the Thailand Masters and the 2026 European Championships.

Christiansen said he relished the unique atmosphere in Jakarta, where the passionate crowd created an environment far removed from badminton's traditional image as a quiet sport.

“Winning here feels like a dream. We love Indonesia and we love playing here,” Christiansen said in Indonesian.

“After the match, we cried because we were exhausted after spending a month competing in Asia.”

He added that the pair would spend the following week vacationing in Labuan Bajo, the coastal gateway to Komodo National Park, before returning to competition.
