Jakarta. A political analyst has suggested that the increasing number of political parties intending to join the future government led by Prabowo Subianto may require the creation of additional ministerial positions to accommodate them.

Typically, a new president allocates cabinet positions to representatives of political parties as a continuation of collaboration and, more importantly, to express gratitude for their support during the election.

Prabowo, who was nominated for president by four incumbent parties, has garnered additional support from two more parties since his election was confirmed last week.

The Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) could increase the total number of coalition members to seven if its upcoming Advisory Council meeting also pledges support for Prabowo.

Furthermore, at least four smaller parties without seats in the House of Representatives have joined Prabowo’s presidential campaign team.

"We now have 80 percent of parties supporting Prabowo, which indicates he will lead a new, very strong government," said Siti Zuhro, a professor of politics from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).

To accommodate the substantial support from various parties, Prabowo may need to create new positions in the cabinet. Siti Zuhro suggested that this could include numerous vice-ministerial positions to ensure representation for all supportive parties while also reserving certain ministerial posts for professionals.

"In light of these developments, the law on state ministries may need to be revised and adjusted to meet current needs," Siti added.

She noted that political parties typically vie for positions in strategic offices such as the Finance Ministry, the Trade Ministry, the Industry Ministry, the Energy Ministry, the Investment Ministry, the Home Affairs Ministry, the Foreign Affairs Ministry, and the Attorney General’s Office.

However, having support from too many political parties could potentially impede the formation of a “professional cabinet” as the president would need to allocate many ministerial posts to politicians, Siti said.
