Jakarta. The support for Ganjar Pranowo has risen by six points since he was officially nominated for president by the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, or PDI-P, last month, while his two main contenders begin to struggle nine months into the election, according to a new survey.

The support for Ganjar stands at 39.2 percent, up from 33.2 percent in April, according to the public opinion survey by Saiful Mujani Research and Consulting (SMRC) published on Friday.

In a hypothetical race of three major candidates, the Central Java governor extended his lead over Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto (32.1 percent) and former Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan (19.7 percent).

SMRC Research Director Deni Irvani said 8.9 percent of respondents remain undecided.

In the past two years, Prabowo and Anies have seen their support drop by two percentage points and 3.8 percentage points, respectively, in the same poll.

When compared to the same poll last month, the support for Prabowo rose slightly by 0.6 of a point in contrast to a 4.5-point loss suffered by Anies.

"It appears that Ganjar managed to make some Anies’ supporters jump ship for him and attract the previously undecided voters,” Deni said.

The support for Ganjar has been growing steadily in the past two years in the close-ended poll offering three names, with support jumping by 13.7 points. He is the only candidate to enjoy a two-digit rise in support since SMRC conducted polls for the 2024 election.

The latest survey was conducted from April 30-May 7 involving 1,020 voting-age respondents across the country. SMRC said the poll has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
