From Corruption Hunter to Suspect: Police Name Former Top Prosecutor in Graft Probe
Jakarta. Indonesian police have named former Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes Febrie Adriansyah as a suspect in a sweeping corruption and money laundering investigation before transferring the high-profile cases to the Attorney General's Office.
The National Police's Anti-Corruption Corps announced on Saturday that investigators had identified two suspects following days of searches and witness interviews linked to alleged corruption involving state-owned companies.
Anti-Corruption Corps chief Inspector General Totok Suharyanto said investigators questioned 15 witnesses and two expert witnesses, while conducting searches at multiple locations before naming the suspects.
"Based on the case review, we have named two suspects," Totok told reporters.
The first suspect, identified only as DR, is a private-sector businessman accused of laundering proceeds from corruption.
The second suspect, identified by police as FA, is Febrie Adriansyah, who resigned earlier Saturday as Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes after police searched his home as part of the investigation.
According to Totok, Febrie is suspected of corruption and money laundering related to the handling of major corruption cases during his tenure at the Attorney General's Office, including investigations involving state insurer Asabri and other graft cases.
DR has been detained since Friday at the Jakarta Police detention center, while authorities have not disclosed whether Febrie has been taken into custody.
The investigation stems from a broader probe into alleged corruption involving coal procurement for state-owned electricity company PLN, the Asabri corruption case, and debt restructuring involving PT CBS and a subsidiary of Krakatau Steel. Police have also alleged that irregularities in coal procurement contributed to recent disruptions in electricity supply.
In recent days, investigators searched multiple locations, including a money changer, De'Clan Signature Cafe in South Jakarta, and a luxury home in Sentul, West Java, belonging to Febrie. Authorities previously said they seized more than Rp 530 billion in cash and 74 kilograms of gold during the raids, although ownership of the assets has yet to be established.
Later on Saturday, acting Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes Rudi Margono formally accepted the transfer of the three investigations from the National Police.
Rudi described the handover as part of a coordinated effort between the police and prosecutors to accelerate the handling of cases that have attracted widespread public attention.
"We formally accept the transfer of these three cases as a commitment to speed, professionalism and institutional synergy," Rudi said. "We will thoroughly examine all evidence while continuing to uphold the presumption of innocence."
The transfer comes after Febrie stepped down from his post, with the Attorney General's Office saying his resignation was intended to preserve the integrity and impartiality of the legal process.
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is expected to supervise the investigation alongside the police and prosecutors.
The developments also prompted Indonesia's House of Representatives to establish a special parliamentary working committee to oversee the investigation.
The committee, unanimously approved by Commission III, will monitor the handling of what lawmakers described as a "megacorruption" case involving alleged misconduct by law enforcement officials.
Commission III chairman Habiburokhman said the working committee would oversee coordination between the Attorney General's Office, the National Police and the KPK to ensure the investigation proceeds transparently.
"The Attorney General's Office will take the lead in handling these cases while continuing to work in synergy with the police, under KPK supervision and parliamentary oversight," he said.
Lawmakers from across the political spectrum condemned the alleged involvement of senior law enforcement officials in the scandal and called for severe punishment if the allegations are proven.
Several legislators also urged the Attorney General's Office to establish an independent investigative team with no ties to Febrie to prevent conflicts of interest and bolster public confidence in the inquiry.
Vice Chairman of Commission III Ahmad Sahroni said the case should become a catalyst for broader institutional reform within Indonesia's law enforcement agencies.
"This is the time for a thorough clean-up of law enforcement," Sahroni said. "The Attorney General's Office must appoint a truly independent team with no affiliation to the suspect."
The parliamentary committee plans to hold regular hearings with investigators and prosecutors as the inquiry progresses, reflecting growing political pressure to ensure one of Indonesia's most closely watched corruption investigations proceeds without interference.
