Evidence Supports Corruption, Money Laundering Charges against Febrie Adriansyah: Police
Jakarta. Indonesian police on Wednesday maintained that former Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes Febrie Adriansyah committed corruption while handling cases involving state-owned insurers and later attempted to launder the proceeds.
Police made the allegations in response to a pretrial motion filed by Febrie seeking to overturn his designation as a suspect.
Jakarta Metropolitan Police Legal Affairs Chief Abrianto Pardede told the South Jakarta District Court that the corruption investigation, the search of Febrie’s property, and his designation as a suspect were supported by at least two pieces of evidence, as required under Indonesia’s Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP).
“The evidence we obtained includes testimony from relevant witnesses and experts, as well as documents, which subsequently led to the petitioner [Febrie] being named a suspect,” Abrianto told the court.
He said the alleged corruption occurred while Febrie, then serving as deputy attorney general for special crimes, was handling major corruption cases involving state-owned insurers Asabri and Asuransi Jiwasraya.
“Based on the investigation, there are also allegations that the petitioner committed money laundering involving assets reasonably suspected of originating from corruption, with the intention of concealing or disguising the source of those assets,” Abrianto said.
Police searched one of Febrie’s homes in Bogor Regency on July 9 and discovered 74 kilograms of gold bars and millions of dollars in cash in various currencies concealed inside a hidden safe.
The following day, police named Febrie a suspect in a case that has drawn significant public attention because of concerns over potential friction between the National Police and the Attorney General’s Office and because it involves a former senior prosecutor who held the highest-ranking position overseeing corruption prosecutions.
Febrie’s legal team previously asked the court to order police to return assets seized from his residence in the Parahyangan Golf 2 cluster in Sentul, Bogor, including the gold and cash.
The pretrial proceedings are being presided over by sole judge Richard Edwin Basoeki.
