Dual Role: Foreign Minister Sugiono Takes Over as Gerindra’s Secretary-General
Jakarta. Foreign Minister Sugiono has been appointed secretary-general of the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra), assuming a dual role in both government and party leadership. The appointment, signed by party chairman and President Prabowo Subianto, took effect immediately on August 1.
Outgoing secretary-general Ahmad Muzani announced the transition via his Instagram account on Friday, ending his 17-year tenure in the post he had held since Gerindra’s founding on February 6, 2008.
“With the appointment letter taking effect upon signing, I am no longer Gerindra’s secretary-general. That position now belongs to Sugiono,” Muzani wrote. “I am deeply grateful to the chairman and all Gerindra members for the trust they have placed in me over the years.”
Muzani, who also serves as deputy speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), has been appointed head of Gerindra’s Honorary Council, a senior advisory role within the party.
Sugiono, 46, is a founding member of Gerindra and previously served in the Indonesian Army with the rank of first lieutenant. He entered politics in 2019, winning a seat in the House of Representatives and serving on Commission I, which oversees foreign affairs, defense, and intelligence.
In October 2024, following Prabowo’s inauguration as president, Sugiono was appointed foreign minister.
