Prabowo Cabinet Reshuffle Puts Focus on Industry, Energy and Diplomacy
Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto's latest cabinet reshuffle has given several senior officials new mandates, with newly appointed ministers outlining priorities ranging from industrial development and energy transition to foreign policy and fiscal management.
Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia will also lead the newly established coordinating ministry for downstream industrialization and energy transition. He said Prabowo considered the two areas strategic amid shifting global geopolitics and growing demand for clean energy.
“The president considers downstream industrialization and energy transition important, as part of Indonesia’s global commitment under the Paris Agreement,” Bahlil said on Thursday.
Indonesia aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060 or sooner, with a target of raising renewable energy's share of the energy mix to 19%-23% by 2030 and 70%-72% by 2060.
Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Christiawan Nasir, who replaced Sugiono, said he would continue Indonesia's existing foreign policy based on national interests and the country's "free and active" principle.
The career diplomat said Indonesia would continue contributing to regional and global peace while pursuing its bid for a nonpermanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2029-2030. He also said he would continue initiatives launched under Sugiono.
New Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Dudung Abdurachman said his initial priority would be strengthening coordination among institutions under his ministry to improve the country's security situation. Dudung, a retired Army general and former presidential chief of staff, replaced Djamari Chaniago.
New Industry Minister M. Sarmuji said manufacturing should become a major driver of economic growth and job creation. He highlighted labor-intensive industries such as footwear and textiles, which have faced mass layoffs, as priorities.
At the Finance Ministry, newly appointed Deputy Finance Minister Luky Alfirman said his immediate priorities included completing the 2026 state budget, preparing the 2027 budget and supporting internal reforms at the ministry.
The ministry itself underwent a change in leadership on Sept. 14, when Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa was replaced as finance minister by his deputy, Suahasil Nazara.
Luky and Suahasil face the task of executing the 2026 budget while preparing the 2027 budget amid concerns over the fiscal deficit, energy subsidies and investor confidence.
The reshuffle, announced at the Presidential Palace also saw former National Police chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo appointed presidential chief of staff, while Suyudi Ario Seto became the new police chief.
