Indonesia Pledges $1.2 Million to Cash-Strapped UN Palestine Agency
Jakarta. Indonesia recently pledged $1.2 million to the cash-strapped UN agency that saves Palestinian refugees, while calling on other governments to donate as well.
Foreign Minister Sugiono, who goes by one name, joined a UN ministerial session where governments consolidated financial backing for the organization's Palestine relief agency, UNRWA, on Thursday.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the forum that UNRWA was facing a “severe financial crisis with a cash shortfall of $100 million”. He warned that the deficit had put operations at risk and threatened the lifeline for millions of Palestinians.
Indonesia — a staunch pro-Palestinian supporter — later vowed that it would remain a loyal UNRWA donor.
"Sustained and predictable funding must be secured for the agency. Indonesia’s commitment remains firm and consistent,” Sugiono said in New York.
“This year, we will continue our annual contribution of $1.2 million to UNRWA. We encourage others to step up their support.”
The meeting saw some members raise their financial contributions amid heightened Israeli aggression.
Germany unveiled an extra 10 million euros ($11.4 million) for infrastructure rehabilitation, and another package of the same amount for UNRWA’s operations in Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria. This brought Berlin’s 2026 support to a total of 97 million euros ($110.3 million). UNRWA also raised an additional 15 million euros ($17 million) from France that day.
A 2025 UNRWA donor report showed that Indonesia had given $1.2 million to the agency’s general funds used to pay recurrent staff and non-staff costs. Southeast Asia’s biggest economy donated $426,000 to fund the flash appeal in the occupied Palestinian territory. Indonesia’s contributions also involved the national alms agency Baznas.
The US — the world’s richest economy and the largest UNRWA donor — has halted its funding.
UNRWA is heavily dependent on voluntary contributions.
