Constitutional Court Set to Rule on Presidential Election Dispute on Thursday
Jakarta. The Constitutional Court has indicated that it will issue a ruling on Thursday – a day early – on the election dispute filed by defeated presidential candidate pair Prabowo Subianto and Sandiaga Uno.
"Yes, the verdict was pushed forward to Thursday at 12:30 p.m.," Constitutional Court spokesman Fajar Laksono said on Monday.
He said there was no specific reason for the change, aside from the fact the judges had reached a verdict.
About 47,000 members of the police and military are ready to secure key points in Jakarta, National Police spokesman Brig. Gen Dedi Prasetyo said.
A splinter group has called for a mass gathering in Jakarta this week to put pressure on the court, despite Prabowo's repeated calls on his supporters to stand down. Police worry that the rally may turn violent, in a repeat of last month's events.
Security personnel will be deployed at the Constitutional Court building, the State Palace, the head offices of the General Elections Commission (KPU) and Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), and foreign embassies.
Members of the Jakarta Police, Indonesian Military (TNI) and municipal police will also conduct checks to prevent large groups of people from reaching the Constitutional Court building.
"We will conduct a joint traffic inspection. If there are groups of people with an unclear purpose, they will be told to return home," Jakarta Police traffic director Chief Comr. Yusuf said on Sunday.
The Constitutional Court judges are holding a judicial consultative meeting from Monday to Wednesday this week to discuss all matters related to the disputed result of the 2019 presidential election.
