BNPB Reports 267 Lives Lost from Natural Disasters in 2023
Jakarta. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded 4,940 disasters in Indonesia throughout 2023, primarily dominated by floods, landslides, and extreme weather events.
Natural disasters in 2023 resulted in 267 fatalities, over 9 million people affected and displaced, 33 missing individuals, and 5,785 injured.
"The most significant in 2023 were hydrometeorological disasters, including floods, landslides, and extreme weather, comprising about half of the total 4,940 disasters," said BNPB Chief Suharyanto at a press conference in Jakarta on Friday.
According to the BNPB report, there were 1,170 flood disasters, 1,155 extreme weather events, and 31 tidal waves and abrasions.
The El Nino phenomenon, occurring every four years, became a significant contributing factor to land and forest fires. In 2023 alone, there were 1,802 incidents of land and forest fires.
BNPB also reported 579 landslides, 31 earthquakes, and 4 volcanic eruptions. There were also 168 drought disasters.
