NTT Earthquake Death Toll Climbs as Strong Quakes Hit Sumatra, Sulawesi
Jakarta. The death toll from the magnitude-7.7 earthquake that struck East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on Saturday has risen to 47, as two separate strong earthquakes jolted North Sumatra and Central Sulawesi several hours later.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a magnitude-6.4 earthquake in North Sumatra at 5:57 p.m., with tremors reportedly felt as far away as the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
Another magnitude-6.2 earthquake struck at 11:25 p.m., with its epicenter in the Gulf of Tomini near Parigi Moutong Regency, Central Sulawesi.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage from the earthquakes in North Sumatra and Central Sulawesi.
The two earthquakes occurred separately from the deadly NTT disaster, and authorities have not indicated that the three events were connected.
Meanwhile, the government has dispatched 50,000 packages of essential supplies to communities affected by the NTT earthquake, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said.
President Prabowo Subianto has also instructed Coordinating Human Development and Culture Minister Pratikno, Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian, Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo, National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) chief Suharyanto and National Search and Rescue Agency chief Mohammad Syafii to travel to Labuan Bajo and Maumere to lead the emergency response.
Teams from state electricity company PLN, energy company Pertamina, telecommunications provider Telkom and food logistics agency Bulog have also been deployed to help restore electricity and energy supplies, telecommunications infrastructure and rice distribution in affected areas, Teddy said.
Suharyanto said the government would ensure that survivors receive basic necessities, including food, drinking water, clean water, temporary shelter, generators and other emergency supplies.
Authorities are also mobilizing existing logistics stocks from surrounding areas. The Social Affairs Ministry is expected to transfer supplies over the next one or two days from neighboring regencies that suffered less damage or were unaffected by the earthquake.
BNPB said the confirmed death toll had reached 47 across several regencies in NTT.
The earthquake also damaged at least 87 schools, 18 health facilities, five places of worship and six government buildings, according to the agency.
