Biden Congratulates Prabowo on Election Triumph
Jakarta. US President Joe Biden congratulates President-elect Prabowo Subianto after the General Election Commission (KPU) declared the defense minister to be Indonesia’s new president.
The congratulatory message came during a phone call between the two leaders on Saturday, as reported by the White House press statement. The President and President-elect commended the United States and Indonesia for celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations grounded in shared values of democracy and pluralism.
"President Biden pledged to expand cooperation with Indonesia under the US-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and Indo-Pacific Economic Framework and to work together towards an Indo-Pacific that is free, open, prosperous, and secure," the White House stated.
During bilateral discussions at the White House in November, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and President Biden agreed to elevate the partnership between their nations from a strategic level to a comprehensive strategic partnership (CSP). This elevation is expected to enhance bilateral relations, particularly in economic domains.
With the establishment of this comprehensive strategic partnership, Indonesia and the US are poised to deepen cooperation across various sectors. Notably, both countries have expressed their intention to strengthen the global semiconductor value chain to enhance resilience. The US is planning to commence a review of Indonesia's semiconductor ecosystem, encompassing regulatory frameworks and workforce considerations, to foster greater collaboration. Furthermore, there are plans to extend the existing five-year memorandum of understanding on health cooperation beyond its scheduled expiration in May.
Prabowo's victory was confirmed by the KPU on Wednesday night, with approximately 96.2 million votes secured across 36 out of 38 provinces, ensuring his win in a single round of the presidential race. Prabowo is slated for inauguration as the new president on October 20th.
