Bali on High Alert as Floods, Landslides Hit Cities and Tourist Areas
Denpasar, Bali. Days of relentless heavy rain have triggered widespread flooding, landslides and hazardous sea conditions across Bali, disrupting daily life in urban centers and popular tourist areas.
In Denpasar, flash floods inundated residential neighborhoods, including parts of Hang Tuah Street, after nearby rivers overflowed their banks on Tuesday. Water levels in some areas reached up to one meter, forcing residents to wade through knee-deep water inside their homes. Furniture and vehicles were damaged, and normal activities were brought to a halt.
Residents said the flooding was caused by swollen rivers rather than clogged drainage. The area is prone to flooding after prolonged rain, but locals described this week’s inundation as worse than usual following several consecutive days of downpours.
Flooding also hit parts of Kuta, Legian, and Sanur, where joint search-and-rescue teams evacuated residents from submerged neighborhoods. In Campuhan, near Dewi Sri Street, floodwaters rose to chest height in some locations. Authorities deployed rubber boats and canoes as access roads became impassable. One resident required medical evacuation after suffering a leg injury.
Emergency responders said heavy rain and strong winds hampered rescue efforts, though water levels began to recede by late afternoon on Tuesday. No fatalities were reported.
Meanwhile, in Gianyar, intense rainfall triggered landslides in Ubud, damaging religious and public facilities. At Pura Kelembu temple, a collapsed retaining wall crushed three temple structures, causing an estimated Rp 500 million ($29,750) in losses. No injuries were reported, but authorities warned of potential aftershocks as saturated soil remains unstable.
Another landslide struck near The Yoga Barn in Ubud, damaging buildings and temporarily blocking access to a local elementary school. Cleanup efforts were delayed due to ongoing rain and safety concerns.
Further east, Karangasem reported at least 19 weather-related incidents, including fallen trees, collapsed retaining walls, and landslides. Several homes and roads were damaged, but officials confirmed there were no casualties.
Adding to concerns, Indonesia’s weather agency BMKG warned of dangerous sea conditions around Bali and nearby waters. Waves of up to four meters are forecast between Feb. 25 and Feb. 28 in the southern Indian Ocean off Java, Bali and Nusa Tenggara, posing risks to fishermen, cargo vessels and ferries.
BMKG said moderate to extreme rainfall is expected to continue across much of Bali through Feb. 26, with red-level alerts — the highest warning — issued for Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar, Tabanan, Klungkung and Karangasem. Authorities urged residents, tourists and maritime operators to remain vigilant, monitor official weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel in high-risk areas.
