Bali Weather Alert: Strong Winds Damage Homes in Denpasar
Denpasar, Bali. Dozens of homes were damaged and a 13-year-old child was injured after heavy rain and strong winds struck parts of Denpasar in the early hours of Wednesday, local authorities and witnesses said.
The severe weather followed hours of intense rainfall that began on Tuesday afternoon and continued into Wednesday morning. Residents in the Pakis Aji neighborhood of East Denpasar were jolted awake around 2 a.m. local time as violent winds tore through the area, ripping off rooftops and toppling walls.
Several houses sustained significant structural damage, with roofs blown away and debris scattered across residential streets. A 13-year-old child was taken to hospital after being struck by falling roof materials, residents said. The child’s condition later stabilized after receiving medical treatment.
“The strong wind came very suddenly,” said Nyoman Merti, whose home was among those damaged. “I was still awake when I saw my metal roof almost come loose from the wooden supports. Within about five minutes, it was gone. Around 25 houses here were affected.”
Another resident, Nyoman Murni, said she was at a traditional market preparing to sell goods when she received a call informing her that her house had been destroyed and her child injured.
“I left for the market around 1 a.m. while my child was sleeping at home,” she said. “About an hour later, neighbors called to say the wall had collapsed and my child had been hit by debris. My neighbors helped and called an ambulance.”
She added that her child managed to escape through the side of the house after a wall collapsed. “Thankfully, after treatment at the hospital, my child is recovering and only suffered scrapes and back pain,” she said.
Similar damage was reported in Sidakarya village in South Denpasar, where strong winds tore off roofs and damaged family temples used by Hindus for daily worship. Residents, assisted by the Denpasar Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), were seen clearing debris and securing damaged structures.
State electricity company PLN dispatched crews to restore power after outages caused by fallen trees and damaged power lines. Authorities said assessments were ongoing to determine the full extent of the damage.
Indonesia’s meteorology agency, through the Denpasar-based Regional Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BBMKG) Region III, said Bali’s weather is generally expected to remain dominated by moderate rainfall. Wind speeds across the island are forecast to range between 5 and 46 kilometers per hour, with maximum air temperatures reaching 31 degrees Celsius.
BBMKG also warned of rough sea conditions, with wave heights in northern Bali waters ranging from 0.75 to 2.5 meters, while waves in southern Bali waters could reach between 0.75 and 4.0 meters. Authorities urged residents and maritime operators to remain vigilant as extreme weather conditions persist during the peak of the rainy season.
