Anak Krakatau Eruption: Careful What You Share on Social Media
Jakarta. The government is urging Indonesians to be mindful of what they share on social media to prevent widespread panic amid Mount Anak Krakatau's eruptions.
"Please stay calm, but don't let your guard down. People should follow instructions from the authorities. Also make sure that the information they receive comes from trusted sources," Communications Minister Meutya Hafid said.
She went on to remind people to "filter any information before they share it" on their social media.
By reliable sources, Meutya meant the communication channels of the respective authorities. These include the volcanology agency PVMBG, the weather agency BMKG, the disaster management authority BNPB, and regional governments, among others.
"This is key to preventing any misinformation that can cause panic."
Mount Anak Krakatau, which lies in the Sunda Strait, has been erupting since Friday night. It has sent its volcanic ash to Banten, the Greater Jakarta Area, and West Java. The volcanic activity has disrupted some flights and sent kids to remote learning.
The government has also instructed people to wear masks when outside and limit outdoor activities.
